Nos últimos 10 anos o fim de semana do feriado do Dia do Trabalho nos Estados Unidos sempre significa que um monte de loucos obstinados fãs dos Rolling Stones estará reunido à beira-mar, num lugar conhecido como Wildwood, que fica em New Jersey. Em 1999, os fãs dos Stones reuniram pela primeira vez na costa, mas em 2000 ele se tornou um evento oficial de um lugar chamado Memory Motel que tinha uma rampa com uma língua dos Stones na piscina, deslizando para a água. Infelizmente, o Memory Motel foi demolido e vários motéis têm recebido o evento desde então. Todo ano, o encontro tem obtido maior número de fãs e 2010 não foi diferente. Este 10º aniversário do Shidoobee.com reuniu pelo menos 150 fãs de todo o país e também alguns do Canadá.
Este ano o evento foi batizado de Exiled in Wildwood, começando na quinta-feira para alguns fãs, mas a maioria das pessoas chegou após o trabalho na tarde de sexta-feira, quando houve o início oficial das festividades.
Na tarde de sexta-feira houve uma reunião ao lado da piscina, no convés do nosso novo quartel-general: The Beach Terrace Inn Motor.
Todo mundo estava ansioso para ver gente que não tinha encontrado desde a última turnê dos Stones, que acabou mais de três anos atrás. Havia muitos abraços e muito mais gargalhadas. Depois fomos para o calçadão à beira da praia, onde há restaurantes para o jantar. O clube motel, chamado La Chanson, foi anfitrião de todas as bandas durante o fim de semana. A primeira atração foi Canada’s Blushing Brides, com o carismático Maurice Raymond como Mick Jagger. A banda não tinha tocado em Wildwood desde o início de 2000 e foram muito bem-vindos, tocando canções dos Stones como “Star Star”.
Depois do show dos Blushing, a maioria dos fãs continuou comemorando em várias partes, como em seus quartos ou em suas varandas do lado da praia até o amanhecer.
No sábado, pela manhã, ou mais precisamente, no início da tarde, começou com Bloody Mary e um café da manhã. Tivemos tempo livre à tarde para nadar na piscina, ir à praia, à loja do calçadão ou passear pelo cais. No meio da tarde, assistimos ao vídeo Silver Screen, uma espécie de documentário, com vídeos ao vivo, música e fotografias detalhando tours Stones e do passado de Wildwood. Após o jantar, mais uma vez nos reunimos em La Chanson. Desta vez, a atração era a Glimmer Twins.
A Glimmer Twins tipicamente foca suas apresentações no período de 1969-1978 da música Stones, mas este show começou com um conjunto de canções de 1981, como “Let Me Go” e “Just My Imagination”. A Glimmer Twins tocou três sets.Posteriormente tivemos o que é chamado de “The Sessions Dumpster”, porque os fãs puxam suas cadeiras em torno do estacionamento para conversar e cantar músicas dos Stones até a madrugada. Este ano, não fomos autorizados a fazer isto no deck da piscina, mas o motel disse que poderíamos continuar no interior La Chanson. Alguns fãs ficaram, enquanto outros optaram por pontos mais privados, em seus apartamentos ou varandas.No domingo, o grande evento da tarde foi o Sing-A-Long no convés, onde todos se reúnem para cantar canções dos Stones, um estilo karaokê. Este evento passou toda a tarde. Diversos grupos de fãs se apresentaram em shows pré-planejados.
Houve troca de presentes, memorabília. Este ano houve de tudo, desde cds, dvds, pôsters, bonés, camisetas, pins e livros.Tiramos também uma foto do grupo na rua, em frente a motel, o que criou uma cena na rua, com pessoas buzinando e olhando para os 150 fãs vestidos com trajes stoneanos.
No domingo à noite, a Shattered foi a nossa banda tributo destaque e levou-nos através de dois conjuntos com raridades Stones.
Tivemos momentos fabulosos e segunda-feira, ao meio-dia, houve o check-out. Assim que termina o encontro, o planejamento para o próximo ano começa. Uma uma coisa é certa, não vemos a hora de Wildwood 2011 começar!** O texto original foi editado e sofreu algumas adaptações.

More than 150 fans celebrated in Wildwood 2010

For the past 10 years Labor Day Weekend always means that a bunch of crazy diehard Rolling Stones fans will be descending on the seaside resort known as Wildwood, New Jersey. In 1999, Stones fans first gathered at the shore, but in 2000 it became an official fan event at the aptly named Memory Motel, complete with Rolling Stones tongue sliding board for the pool. Sadly, the Memory Motel was torn down, and various motels have hosted the event ever since. Every year the event has gotten bigger and 2010 was no exception. This 10th Anniversary of the Shidoobee.com hosted event brought at least 150 fans from around the USA and Canada. This year’s “Exiled in Wildwood” event began on Thursday for some fans who were able to take advantage of the early bird discount motel rates, but the majority of fans rolled into town after work on Friday afternoon for the official start of the three day holiday weekend festivities.
On Friday afternoon there was a Meet N’ Greet for all fans pool side on the large deck of our new headquarters, The Beach Terrace Motor Inn. Everyone was anxious to catch up with folks they had not seen since the last Stones tour ended, over 3 years ago and there were many hugs and lots more laughter. Afterwards most fans hit the local boardwalk and beach side restaurants for dinner. The motel’s club, called La Chanson, was host to all the bands for the weekend starting with Canada’s Blushing Brides on Friday night featuring the charismatic Maurice Raymond as Mick Jagger. The Brides had not played Wildwood since the early 2000’s and were a welcome treat, playing two blistering sets of Stones favorites like “Star Star”. After the Brides gig, most fans carried on with various parties in their rooms or on their beach side balconies until sunrise.
On Saturday, the morning or more accurately, early afternoon, got started with Bloody Mary’s and the motel breakfast buffet. Fans had free time in the afternoon to go swimming in the pool, hit the beach, shop on the boardwalk or check out the amusement rides on the pier. In the mid-afternoon we were treated to the Silver Screen video series, a documentary of sorts, featuring live video, music and photos detailing Stones tours and Wildwood’s past put together by a fellow fan. After dinner, we once again gathered in La Chanson for The Glimmer Twins. The Glimmer Twins typically focus their shows on the 1969-78 period of Stones music, but for this show they began with a 1981 set featuring songs like “Let Me Go” & “Just My Imagination”. The Glimmer Twins played three sets. Afterwards, in Wildwood’s past we used to have what was referred to as “The Dumpster Sessions”, because fans would pull their chairs around in the parking lot (which happened to be next to some trash dumpsters) and chat and sing Stones songs until the wee hours. This year, we were not allowed to do this on the pool deck, but the motel said we could carry on the private fan only party inside La Chanson. Some fans stayed and partied on, while others opted to have more private parties in their own rooms or balconies.
On Sunday, the big event of the afternoon is the Sing-A-Long on the deck, where everyone gathers to sing Stones songs, either karaoke style or with live musicians backing them up. This event went on all afternoon, with many fans taking a turn to sing and several groups putting on special pre-planned performances. There is also a Stones memorabilia give-a-way during this time, where everyone brings a Stones item to give away and in turn, if their number is called, they get to pick a Stones items from the gift table. This year there was everything from cds, dvds, posters, hats, tee shirts, pins, books and even some big ticket items like a Stones deck chair. We also take a group photo across the street from the motel on the steps of the local post office, which creates quite a scene on the street with people honking horns and staring at the 150 fans gathered together in their various Stones attire. Sunday evening Shattered was our featured tribute band and took us through two sets featuring Stones rarities such as “The Long Black Veil” a song by the Chieftans, which had featured Mick Jagger.
A fabulous time was had by all, and Monday at noon was check-out, although some fans stayed on until Tuesday. As soon as it ends the planning begins for the next year and one thing is for sure, we can’t wait for Wildwood 2011!
